After all the glittering and hustle bustle that the island has to offer, finally for one day in a year, this Island of God has to shut down for 24 hours from 06.00 am to 06.00 am the next day. The Silence Day or well known as Nyepi Day is celebrated for self-reflection, where people are not allowed for travel and stay at home instead, not allowed to use any lights or fire, not allowed to Work or enjoy entertainment, not a single person is allowed to do those activities, even the tourist needs to stay within the hotel premises.
During Nyepi, all the streets, International Airport, bus station as well as harbors remain closed for the entire day and no one is allowed to step outside the house or do outdoor activity. All the lights and sounds will be remaining off. The only exceptions granted for emergency vehicles carrying those with life-threatening conditions and women about to give birth, ambulance, police patrol and Pecalang – traditional Balinese police.
In the Nyepi’ Eve or Pengrupukan Day, there will be Ogoh-Ogoh parade in the main street or in the neighborhood. This giant statue is normally built with the shape of demons by using timber, bamboo, sponge and even unused newspaper. It is aims to purify the surrounding or environment from any evil spirits.
