Nyepi is a Balinese Hindu celebration that marks the Saka New Year and is observed in Bali as a day of silence, reflection, and renewal. For one full day, the island comes to a complete standstill. The observance is guided by the “Catur Brata Penyepian,” four spiritual principles practiced during Nyepi:
Amati Geni – No fire or light (including limited electricity use)
Amati Karya – No work
Amati Lelungan – No travel
Amati Lelanguan – No entertainment or pleasure

The Rituals Leading Up to Nyepi
Nyepi is part of a series of sacred rituals that take place over several days:
Melasti
A purification ceremony held at the beach or sacred water sources, where sacred temple objects are cleansed to symbolize spiritual renewal.
Tawur Kesanga & Ogoh-Ogoh Parade
On the eve of Nyepi, vibrant and dramatic parades fill the streets with large handcrafted statues called Ogoh-Ogoh. These figures represent negative forces or evil spirits. The lively procession, accompanied by traditional music, concludes with the symbolic cleansing of these energies.
Nyepi Day (Day of Silence)
The following day, the island enters complete silence. The contrast from the lively night before to total stillness is profound and deeply meaningful.
Ngembak Geni
The day after Nyepi marks a time for forgiveness, family gatherings, and reconnecting with loved ones as the new year officially begins.
